I am happy to add a positive review to what seems like an unfair amount of negative ones. It was after 8pm on Dec 22, 3 nights before Christmas, and I went to drop off some postcards in the lobby drop box, only to discover that the lobby now closes at 6pm (I am told the early closing time was due to the increase of vagrants sleeping in there).
As I turned to walk back to my car a mailman was just pulling in, returning from a late shift, and called me over. I recognized him as my mailman from a previous neighborhood (tho he didn’t know me). He kindly offered to take my mail in so they could go out in the morning as I hoped. It was completely unnecessary and unexpected. But the kind offer, going out of his way, albeit minimally, was touching and reassuring. There are many reviews here that are unfortunate, and I think most are compelled to write when they are upset. But I for one have always had fine experiences at the P.O., and occasionally I have an exceptional experience such as this. These postal workers are overwhelmed and under appreciated. I’m grateful for their service.
I live in Arcata and have gone to this post office many times. Some days are worse than other, but overall the service is terrible. One worker in specific- Brian, was very rude to me and my husband. Not only did he read through the documents I was mailing (without asking permission) but then he proceeded to mock what was written and question it, treating me as though I was stupid. I would have looked past all of this, had it not been for the fact that Brian was racist to my husband- he mispronounced his name several times, over-exaggerating the syllables and then laughing about it with his co-worker. I have never felt the need to leave a one star review before, but this behavior was unacceptable.
I have never had a bad experience here. Each employee has been very kind and helpful. From renewing my passport to sending off my packages. They see a lot of traffic everyday, as the town swells with students each year. Holding strong. Thank you.ðŸ˜Š
Absolutely the worst post office I've ever seen! Their carriers are sadly lacking in manners or anything resembling knowledge of their actual job.. they have lost numerous packages, left one clearly labeled "do not leave in direct sunlight " on my sunny front porch, tossed another package thru a locked gate, & still another package was folded in half and stuffed in the mailbox! I constantly get mail for other addresses not even on my street and occasionally they will go several days without picking up mail when there is outgoing!
There HAS GOT TO BE SOME REGULATION OFFICE TO COMPLAIN TO!!??
yeah hey where do you live I get a similiar but opposite thing happening to me I get MY mail delivered to somewhere / someone else!!! like it says it was delivered, and yet it was not delivered at ALL, at least not to me and MY address!!! I have lost countless amounts of mail this way and it makes me FURIOUS!! WE NEED A NEW POSTAL SERVICE to REPLACE the current one CAUSE CURRENTLY it sucks I want to get my mail all the time ... NOT HALF OR A THIRD OF THE TIME!!! GET IT TOGETHER PLEASE USPS!!

Very unprofessional and rude. I moved into an apartment 1/26/18 and had to request a lock change with a new key. When requesting this they told me that my mailbox would be down the street from my apartment even though my apartment had their own mailboxes right in front. I tried to explain this to the woman I was speaking with and she then said "I've been doing this a long time, I know what I'm doing." I stated I was unsure of where the mailbox she was speaking of was and she stated "you'll figure it out."
At this point I was extremely frustrated. I had been working all day and had my 4 month old with me, after waiting in line for 20 minutes I have this conversation. As you can imagine this was not ideal.
I again explained that the apartment had mailboxes 1-4 and she proceeded to tell me that my mailbox was #5. At this point I said I'd figure it out once I got my keys. They then said I'd need to have them hold my mail but they're open 9-5. I work m-f 7-5 in eureka so I said I wouldn't be able to pick up my mail and she said "You'll figure it out if you can't come on your 30 minute lunch."
I finally left feeling defeated and annoyed because she made me feel like an idiot.
About three weeks later I got a call from the locksmith who explained that the address they gave him for me was not the same as the mailbox they told him. He stated he had been calling them for 2 weeks straight to get this figured out so he decided it was time to call me. I informed him of what I stated above and he stated they've been having problems with this office for a while now. He changed the right lock but I'd probably run into problems when it came to getting my mail, and no surprise he was right. This has been a NIGHTMARE. I have called three times to speak with the postmaster and have not been able to get through or a call back. I hope this reaches someone who can realize things are not being run properly and things need to change. I have important medical bills, immigration paperwork for my husband and other important documents trying to be mailed and I can not afford to have a delay like this as when the immigration paperwork comes through we have to drive down to Sanfran for our interview most of the time this is at days notice.
Anyways this is an ongoing nightmare and I hope that things can start to change at the Arcata post office.
Absolutely horrible. Avoid this place AT ALL COSTS. I just tried calling around 10 times. They let half the calls ring out, and after four rings, there was a genuinely deafening beeping sound. The other half of the calls I made led me to a dead line. They lost AT LEAST around $100 worth of my packages. And this isn't the first time I've been faced with their disgusting incompetency. They've flat out lost other packages and letters of mine, delivered them to the wrong addresses, and left packages out on my porch when I wasn't home, resulting in them being stolen. But worst of all, the employees are flat out bad people. Every time I've ever gone inside with a question (bc they don't answer the phone) they have been incredibly rude, misogynistic, condescending, and mean, and it's obvious that they don't care about their jobs or feel bad about how much money they've costed me and countless others. They make no attempt to hide the fact that they feel no remorse for their actions and act like my coming in there to remedy THEIR oversights is wasting their time. I have to bring my boyfriend inside with me every time I go in, or else they literally don't take me seriously. And when you're waiting in line, it's horrible bc you have to just stand there and watch them be condescending to young kids who've never had a public mailbox, rude to confused elderly people, and one time while in line, an employee wouldn't stop hitting on/harassing a young woman who was there alone and other customers literally had to yell at him and call him an a**hole to get him to stop. Disgusting. Basically if you try to contact any Arcata post office employee for any reason at all, they will be horrible to you bc they see their actual freaking jobs as an inconvenience. Don't bother going in when they lose your mail because they WILL NOT help you. They won't even try.
This post office is corrupt! I sent certified mail to a former employer who had asked me "if I kill you and bury you in the woods would any one come looking for me" after I refused to drill out postal mail box locks at 290 Alder Grove in Arcata at the employers orders. I subsequently found that I was the therd person whom this man hired to drill out the locks. Each of the other two people found out it was a crime and refused. The employer is the husband of the property owner. He hired a fourth person, a employer, who drilled out most of the locks before the post office interceded. The post office refused to except my written complaint against the mail carrier for failing to deliver this letter and sending it back stating "no mail box at that address." My written complaint includes pictures of the mail box with the address that the letter was addressed to. Please people, contact the US attorney by certified mail (but don't send it through the Arcata Post office it won't get there!).
Arcata your services suck. I have had so many issues within the month of me moving here it is bull shit. First, the mailman wouldn't deliver our mail for weeks because a neighbors whom I couldn't get ahold of had a truck that was blocking the mailbox, when it was not. If it's too close for you to pull up next to, get out of your car? You are getting payed to do a job. Where I'm from the mailmen would walk the entire blocks so I don't think that's asking too much. Now that that's been resolved I come to find out a piece of mail I've been waiting on has been at the post office for weeks, and that it is going to be sent back. No slip letting me know that it's arrived? So, I head on over to the post office at 5:10 under the impression they are open until 6 as it says online. And no, they close at 5:00, and the employees were rude. No explanation he just shuts the door after letting a customer out. I wait for another employee to let a customer out, and when I explain she says yes the hours are wrong, but they won't change them. What the hell? If I had known I would have come 10 minutes earlier. I have a job and school to attend I am getting really sick of running back and forth trying to resolve issues that should not be issues in the first place. If your hours online are posted wrong, and I am speaking to you- let me in. That is your guys' fault not mine.
I just called the Arcata Post Office number and let it ring at least 15 times and NOBODY answered..oh surprise. seems to be a problem with post offices.
The carrier claimed they left a note about not being able to deliver to my Rt 177, Fieldbrook address...there's NO note. I want my merchandise but can't contact arcata to have it re-routed to Fields Landing Post Office. Nice!
Just got a notice saying they will not deliver to my home anymore because of my dog. First of all, my dog is a sweetie and has never been aggressive with any person at all. I do understand If the mail carrier is uncomfortable with dogs, all she had to do was tell me! But that never happened. In addition, she was always quite unfriendly and would regularly leave my (previously closed) gate wide open, allowing my dog to roam out into traffic. I would of happily and respectfully made sure my dog was in the house if I had any idea she had a problem. Instead of communication, I got a passive aggressive letter saying that until the mailbox is moved they will not deliver the mail. Thanks alot USPS. Worst service ever!
Worst post office ever!!! After living somewhere for months and turning in multiple forms saying I live here, still all my mail is being returned!! Complained in person multiple times and these morons still can't figure out to deliver my mail. If you live in arcata, get a private mail box and save yourself the trouble of dealing with these idiots!!!
